According to the legend, once a painting of Mary was floating on river Nemumas,
shepherds retrieved it and brought to the church. However, the painting from the
church had disappeared, and people found it by the spring. People brought the
painting back to the church again, but it is still appeared by the spring. Therefore,
here, in the Didžiupis valley, on the slopes of the 19th century hills, it was decided to
erect a wooden chapel and a small altar, the place was considered to be sacred, and
that the water of the nearby spring special powers.
